HELP! I need a good book!

No idea what to read next? FFL to the rescue! I spent some time speaking with Monica Kuryla, our fabulous Director of Virtual and Innovation Services, about the new reader’s advisory tool located on our website.

People can be overwhelmed by the selection in the library, unsure of where to start or what to pick up first. Monica said, “Walking into a library is sort of like walking into a wine store.  You can pick a bottle based on price or the label, but you can’t tell if it will taste good by these factors alone. The same goes for a book and its cover.” Everyone is looking for a “good book;” the challenge is what may be a good book to one person, may be horrible to another. So what is a reader to do?  Ask a librarian, of course!

The Reader’s Advisory service is quite simple to use. Log on to the FFL website and head over to the Reader’s Corner.  About half way down the page you’ll see a link for “Custom Book Recommendations.” This link will take you to a simple form with questions about your favorite (and least favorite) books, preferred genres, mood, and plot types.  From this data, Monica uses her well-honed, super librarian powers to find the “Perfect Book.”  She uses her vast research skills to search magazines, websites, mainstream review sites—anything and everything she can find to help her locate that very special book, just for you. Her main goal as a librarian is to get people to enjoy reading.  According to Monica, people who say they don’t like reading just haven’t found the right book; if they found the right book they would love it.

So, if you’re in the mood to curl up with a good book, but don’t feel like browsing the stacks, click here to submit the recommendation form today. Your customized reading list will be ready within three business days—perfect timing for the fast approaching holiday vacations!
