Sheet music cover from the Vincent Motto Sheet Music Collection

The Vincent Motto Sheet Music Collection is a remarkably diverse compilation of 35,000 sheets of popular American tunes from the last 150 years.  It also includes 500 reference books and assorted materials in different formats. The sheet music presents a chronological picture of America from the Civil War through the music of the 1980's.  The collection includes: melodies of Stephen Foster, political campaign songs, the treasures of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway and Hollywood shows, "big band" arrangements, songs of the common man, and musical protests of the 60's and 70's.

The Collection was donated to the Library by the late Lucy Motto in memory of her husband, Vincent, who died in 1995.  "Vince" was an amateur collector who compiled the collection over a 30-year time span following his singing career with Utica and Syracuse bands.

Rod Hampson, a long-time community volunteer, became the Collection's first curator in 1996.  He donated his time and a lifetime of music appreciation expertise to organize Vince's material and make it accessible.

Meticulously indexed with extensive cross-references, the Collection is a resource for anyone searching for a specific song, for a theme, for personal entertainment, or for doing scholarly research.  It continues to grow through donations and subscriptions.
